Keeping herbs in your home is a timeless tradition and one of the first ways that houseplants were first brought into homes. A lot of people like to keep their herbs in their kitchen just because that is where they are most used.
Herbs are specific plants that are chopped up sliced up and used in the cooking process or in order to spread some type of aromatic quality through candles or burning etc. throughout the home. Today we have 5 different very easy care Herbs for you so let’s get into that.
Basil is very thin-leaved and very bushy when you pinch off the top it can get even bushier and bushier and this is how you can kind of shape your plant and produce as much as possible.
What is liked to be used about basil is the leaves. they will be chopped or it will be crushed. Generally there like to be added to pasta’s pizza’s tomato sauce is these types of things. You can also make a pesto with basil. It has a very very strong flavor and it has a fantastic smell as well. Their leaves are very thin and their foliage a beautiful dark green.
These plants do not like to dry out very much and if they do dry out they’ll start to wilt. They also prefer quite a bit of sunlight, so try to give them as much fun as you possibly can, along with as much water as you possibly can.
The more light you give them the more likely that they are going to need more water. They are very easy to grow and very tenacious. You can even chop up huge bunches of them and they will grow more from that.
Mint is another very tenacious plant. They like it to be very hot and humid. They do not need a lot of light they can be sat in a kitchen window and as long as they are getting some type of lighting they will continue to grow even if they have died back completely.
If you just give them a little bit of light and keep them moist they will grow back for you They are just one of those plants that never seem to die even when you think it is dead. Mint is highly invasive though so if you do think that your mint has died do not just toss it out your back door into your yard. I guarantee it will grow and it will spread everywhere.
Mint is one of those plants that you really want to keep contained in a pot and they make a very great house plant because of this. They do not need a lot of light or a lot of attention and it constantly grows back very quickly. So you can always be chopping it and add it to your various teas and recipes.
Another plant that’s in the mint family is called lemon balm. This is actually fantastic for various teas. Generally, it’s not used in cooking very much but it does add a very citric and lemon flavor if you do decide to add it to your meals.
This is another one of those plants that like the mint, it’s very tenacious. It will grow everywhere and it can be considered very invasive if you let it out. This makes it perfect for an indoor potted plant.
It does not need a lot of light. Just like mint, it wants to be able to grow. It does need quite a bit of water just like the mint so when it is dried out just make sure you’re giving it more water and it will continue to grow for you.
You can chop off bunches of it just like with the basil and then it will continue to get bushier and bushier for you. These plants can get fairly large, fairly quickly, so it is important that you stay up on their trimming otherwise you will end up with a very big bushy plant taking over your window.
Rosemary is very woody-stemmed and it loves a lot of light. It likes to be able to dry out. Give it as much light as you possibly can and they will grow these big woody stems and they will have these little teeny tiny thin leaves just packed full of flavor on there for you.
If you let it go too long it will flower. They make these adorable little cute flowers. Once they start to flower they do start to lose flavor so you do want to pinch those flowers off and pinch them down. Rosemary will get big and bushy for you though if you don’t continue to prune it back but that one little stem that you prune back can pack a lot of flavors. You just have to dry it grind it and add it to whatever kind of dish you are trying to make. It is especially good and various crockpot meals and stir-fries.
Another sun-loving plant on our list is Cilantro. Cilantro absolutely loves its sun. It also is like rosemary in the sense that it does like to dry out but it needs a lot more water than rosemary and the stems are not as woody. They are going to be thinner and they are going to need a lot more water. So as soon as you notice that the soil is dry make sure you’re giving Cilantro more water.
They also prefer a cooler temperature. Anywhere between 50 degrees and 70 degrees. 70 degrees Fahrenheit is the prime temperature for this particular plant to produce as much flavor as possible.
It does produce almost a citric and cooling flavor from the foliage. They usually pick off the leaves and chop them up fresh to be added to things like salsa and tacos and various dressings. That’s mainly what this particular plant is used for. So if you have a cooler high light home and you don’t mind letting it dry out this will be a fantastic edition for you.
There are lots of different kinds of herbs out there. These are just the few that we could pick that is readily available almost everywhere in the world for you.
