Get to Know Monstera Adansonii Houseplant

Do you love the holey leaves of exotic Monstera deliciosa, but don't have the space?

Monstera adansonii is every bit as captivating as the jungle giant without taking over a room. Young plants make a charming table accent. As it grows, you'll want to set it high on a plant stand or shelf and allow the vines to cascade. Or set it in a hanging planter and admire those "Swiss cheese" leaves at eye-level. Want a climber? Provide a trellis or moss stick and watch Monstera adansonii scale to new heights. This tropical vine allows a lot of ways to display it.

How big does Monstera adansonii get? You can expect this South American native to climb or trail up to 8 ft (2.4 m).

Those quick-growing vines can be pruned, if you want to keep your houseplant a reasonable size. Spring is the best time to prune, when the plant is beginning its most vigorous time of growth. Cut a stem after a node (the place where a leaf is attached to a stem). Cuts made here will help the stem branch out -- you'll get a fuller houseplant this way. Never cut off more than one-third of the plant at a time.

How to Propagate Your Houseplant

Don't toss those stem tip cuttings! You can propagate them to expand your houseplant collection -- or share them with friends. The ideal time to propagate houseplants is in spring; they naturally grow faster during the warm months.

Take growing tip cuttings of a mature plant as described above, and insert them into moist peat moss based potting mix.

Keep cuttings warm (around 70°F/21°C). Using a heating mat is the best way to maintain a steady temperature day and night.

Set your new stem tip cuttings of Monstera adansonii in indirect sunlight.

Monstera Adansonii Care Problems, Solutions and Answers

Brown leaf tips are caused by dry air or dry soil. Give this tropical native the moisture it craves by watering thoroughly and boosting humidity around it. See "Water" and "Humidity" tips below.

Yellow leaves? You over-watered. Use a pot with drainage holes and allow potting mix to dry slightly before watering.

Leaves that grow without holes are a sign your Swiss Cheese Vine isn't getting enough light. Don't treat Monsteras like Philodendrons, that will tolerate shadier places in your home. Move your houseplant near a window, but out of hot, direct sunlight. If you don't have a sunny spot for it, use a grow light.

Something bugging your houseplant? Although not common on Monstera spp., spider mites are attracted to houseplants, especially during the winter months when indoor humidity can drop drastically. These destructive pests are so tiny, you'll likely only notice the fine webbing between stems and leaves. Gently wash off the leaves and vines with soapy water. Also watch for mealybugs that tend to cluster along the stems near the base of leaves. Isolate any infested houseplant and treat it right away.

Is Monstera adansonii poisonous? Yes, in fact all Monstera species contain calcium oxalates, according to the ASPCA. All parts of this plant are toxic to cats, dogs and people. The sap may cause dermatitis, so it's a good idea to wear gloves when handling this plant.

Monstera Adansonii Care

Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Keep Monsteras out of direct sunlight, which will burn its leaves, causing dry, brown spots. If new leaves on mature plants are smaller or grow without holes, give it brighter light. It responds well to a grow light. Keep the light fixture about 8 to 10 inches (20 to 24 cm) above the plant for 10 hours a day.

Water: Use a pot with drainage holes to prevent soggy potting mix. Water thoroughly and allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering again. Keep soil barely moist in winter. Yellow leaves are usually a sign of overwatering.

Humidity: Monstera adansonii care includes higher-than-average humidity. Boosting humidity is easy with a cool-mist room humidifier. It's a good idea to use a humidity monitor rather than guess. Aim for a minimum of 50% relative humidity near your houseplant. This rainforest native will tolerate a drier home, but you may see brown leaf tips on it.

Temperature: Monstera adansonii likes average room temps (65-75°F/18-24°C).

Soil: Mix 1 part peat moss-based mix and 1 part sand or perlite for faster drainage.

Fertilizer: Feed every 2 weeks spring through fall with a balanced water-soluble fertilizer. You can stop feeding in winter, when growth is slow.

Florists' Cyclamen plant has silver-and-green, heart-shaped leaves and a bounty of beautiful blooms. Treat it right, and you can expect months of luscious color in your home midwinter.

With this guide, you'll discover tips for growing cyclamen as a houseplant, including how much sunlight it wants, when to water, and why you want to keep your plant.

Get to Know Cyclamen

Thanks to new hybrids, florists' cyclamen plants are bigger, more vigorous and showier than ever before. Rising above heart-shaped, silver-and-green leaves are upright stems bearing beautiful backswept petals in shades of pink, purple, red or white.

Known by the botanical name, Cyclamen persicum, these are hybrids with origins from Southern Europe and the Middle East. If you want to know more about these beauties, you'll find a wealth of information at cyclamen.org.

How big does cyclamen plant get? These florist plants will reach a height of 6-12 in (15-30 cm) tall.

Is it poisonous to pets? Yes, according to aspca.org, cyclamen contain terpenoid saponins that is toxic to cats and dogs.

Are the flowers fragrant? Probably not. Generations of careful selection and breeding has wiped out the fragrance from the original cyclamen plants. The trade-off is an abundance of oversized flowers that deliver months of captivating color for your home.

New Houseplant Do's and Don'ts

If your florists' cyclamen just came home with you, there are a couple things you should know right away.

Remove any foil or plastic pot covering. Why? Although the decorative wrapping may look pretty, it's blocking the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot. One of the things cyclamen won't tolerate is soggy soil.

Don't repot. I know, you just removed the pretty wrapping, and now you're looking at a plain plastic pot. However, repotting a flowering houseplant stresses it, and it may protest by dropping its blooms. You don't want that. If you want to cover a plain nursery pot, drop it into a cachepot -- a decorative pot without drainage holes. I put small rocks in the bottom of cachepots to keep the inner pot above the drainage water.

Keeping Your Cyclamen Plant

Winter-blooming cyclamen plant is usually bought in flower from the florist and treated as an annual, then unfortunately, is tossed out when it begins to deteriorate in spring. However, cyclamen plant is a perennial that you can enjoy for years.

With good care, this cool-season, flowering house plant will last for several months, then can be brought back to bloom the next winter. When flowers die and foliage turns yellow, cut it back. Put the dormant plant in a cool, dark spot for the summer and allow it to dry out. In fall, put the plant back in bright light and resume watering and fertilizing. Blooms should appear in 2-3 months.

Indoor Cyclamen Problems and Cures

Sudden wilting of leaves and flower stems is caused by dry soil. Don't worry -- they'll usually come right back after a thorough watering. Stems and flowers that don't respond can be pinched off.

Shriveled, yellow leaves are a symptom of too-warm temperatures. Remember, this beauty likes it cool. Cut off any dried leaves to keep your houseplant looking its finest.

Wet soil and poor ventilation may cause botrytis -- a gray, fuzzy fungus that can quickly kill the plant. Yellowing leaves with brown patches are a sign of botrytis. Cut off the affected leaves. Cutting off spent flowers and any yellow or shriveled leaves will help air circulation around the plant and help prevent the fungus from growing. If the plant is badly affected, get rid of it.

Aphids and spider mites and cyclamen mites are possible pests. Look over your plant every time you water for these destructive pests. Aphids tend to hang out on stems and new growth. You'll notice the presence of mites by the webbing between stems and leaves. Cut off affected leaves and treat any infestation immediately with a neem oil insecticide.

Photo istockphoto.com

Buying Tips

There are hundreds of cyclamen hybrids to choose from. Many are not even named, making it difficult to recommend one.

Some petals are striped, frilly or tipped with a contrasting color. A few varieties are sweetly scented. Miniature cyclamens are charming, reaching only 5 in (13 cm) tall.

Vibrant blooms make them must-have house plants. Even their lacy leaves are beautiful. Set one on a plant stand to show it off.

Indoor Cyclamen Plant Care

Light: Bright light. Some direct winter sun is okay. Don't have a sunny window? Cyclamen responds well to artificial light.

Water: Keep soil lightly moist at all times. It's best to water cyclamen plant near the edge of the pot, not over the crown, which may cause it to rot. Or water from below by placing pot in a saucer of tepid water for no more than 20 minutes.

Humidity: Moderate (around 40-50% relative humidity). Increase humidity with a cool-mist room humidifier or a humidity tray.

Temperature: Cool temperatures 55-70°F/13-21°C year-round. It will tolerate a low of 40°F/4°C. Your cyclamen will last longer if you keep the plant away from blasts of hot or cold air from doorways and air vents.

Soil: Good-quality all-purpose potting mix

Fertilizer: Feed every 2 weeks with high-phosphorus fertilizer diluted by half only while plant is budding and blooming.

Propagation: Cyclamen seeds are tiny, and slow to germinate. Sow seeds in late summer through fall. They must be kept at 70°F/21°C to germinate; use a heating mat to maintain warmth. You'll wait about a year and a half for most varieties to bloom.

Get to Know Philodendron Brasil

Philodendrons have been cultivated indoors for generations. And for good reason. They're dependable houseplants -- shrugging off neglect now and then, and quickly responding when given proper care.

Philodendron hederaceum 'Brasil' is a cultivar closely related to my long-time favorite Heartleaf Philodendron (P. scandens) and is just as easy to please, enjoying the same warm temperatures, moderate humidity and indirect sunlight.

Philodendron Brasil not only takes its place in this family of easy-care plants, but also boasts long tropical vines of lime-green splashed foliage to brighten up any room.

Whether you train this twining vine to climb, or allow it to trail, you'll love growing this variegated plant. Brasil seems custom-made to lend fresh life to the clean lines and neutral colors of today's homes.

Pinch and Prune

Want a fuller plant? Pinch off growing tips to make your Philodendron Brasil branch out. Use your fingernails or scissors to cut the stem after a leaf node (the place where a or leaf is attached to the stem). Cuts made here will cause the stem to branch, giving your houseplant a lush, full look.

Prune it back anytime to keep it under control. Left to grow, stems will reach several feet long.

Philodendron Hederaceum Varieties

Want more gorgeous varieties of this easy-care Philodendron? I thought so.

New cultivars and hybrids offer captivating colors and patterns to satisfy any plant collector's penchant for the hottest trend in houseplants.

Rio, Silver Stripe, and Cream Splash are just a few. Take a look at Gabriella Plants for pictures and descriptions of variegated Philodendron hederaceum. It's a reputable resource for identifying this new wave of multi-color varieties.

Philodendron Brasil Problems, Solutions and Answers

Brown leaf tips are common on tropical plants suffering in the dry air of a heated home. See "Humidity" tips below.

Leggy stems, having several inches between leaves are caused by a lack of sunlight. Give your houseplant plenty of bright, indirect light to maintain its full, leafy appearance. Don't be afraid to cut off bare stems; this vigorous grower will quickly replace them.

Small leaves may be a sign of low light levels or lack of fertilizer.

Philodendron Brasil reverting to all green? It's not getting enough sunlight. Move this variegated plant closer to a window, but protect it from hot, direct sunlight, which can cause brown scorch marks on its leaves. Give them time, leaves may develop variegation as they age. If not, you can cut them off, if you want.

Is Philodendron Brasil poisonous? Yes, Philodendron leaves are toxic to people and pets, though a lot of leaves would have to be eaten to cause serious illness. Some people are allergic to the sap, which can cause an itchy rash in some people. If you're sensitive to Philodendron sap, wear gloves when handling this plant.

Something bugging your plant? Watch for fungus gnats that hop or crawl on the surface of the soil. They're attracted to wet, peat-based potting mixes. Also look for aphids under leaves and along stems. They suck plant juices, leaving new leaves that look wrinkled with yellow specks. Treat any infestation immediately to prevent bugs from invading your other houseplants.

Vibrantly patterned foliage make Brasil houseplant a knockout. Photo © Monikabaumbach

Wondering when to repot? If the roots are growing out of the drainage holes, or the crown of the plant is pushing above the soil, your houseplant needs repotted. Fresh, loose potting mix will rejuvenate a plant. Spring is the best time, when plants begin their most vigorous time of growth. Use a pot 1- to 2-inches larger. Don't over-pot -- a common mistake with houseplants. Why? A pot that's too big will hold too much water and may lead to root rot.

Philodendron Brasil Care

Origin: South America

Height: Climbs or trails to 4 ft (1.2 m) or more.

Light: Moderate to bright light. Small leaves or long spaces between leaves show that the plant is not getting enough light. Move your philodendron plant to a brighter location, but not into direct sun which can scorch its leaves. Don't have a sunny spot? Philodendron Brasil thrives under artificial grow lights.

Water: Water Philodendron Brasil thoroughly, then allow the top 1-inch (2.5 cm) of soil to dry out before watering again. Always use tepid water for your houseplants because cold water is a shock to these tropical natives. Yellow leaves are caused by over-watering.

Humidity: Aim to maintain 45% relative humidity or higher. Indoor air can become extremely dry in winter without our noticing it. It's a good idea to use a humidity monitor near your tropical plants, rather than guess. Use a humidity tray or a cool-mist room humidifier to raise the humidity for your tropical houseplants and they'll feel right at home. Brown leaf tips are a symptom of dry air.

Temperature: Average room (65-80°F/18-27°C). Keep this South American native warm year-round. It will tolerate a minimum of 60°F/16°C. Don't expose your houseplants to cold blasts from an entryway or set them near a heat/AC vent.

Soil: Peat moss-based mix with added perlite for fast drainage. African violet potting mix is ideal.

Fertilizer: Feed once a month spring through fall with a balanced water-soluble fertilizer, diluted by half. Stop fertilizing in winter, when growth is slow.

Propagation: Take 3-4 in/7-10 cm-long stem tip cuttings (each with at least 3 leaves attached) in spring or early summer. Cut just below a leaf node (the place where the leaf is attached to the stem). Nodes contain cells that will develop new roots. Philodendron Brasil roots easily in water or lightly moist soil.

Get to Know Calamondin Orange Tree

With origins in China, this perennial shrub is actually a cross between a kumquat and a tangerine, known botanically as Citrus x citrofortunella mitis.

Woody stems of this dwarf citrus tree are densely covered with oval, glossy green leaves that have a citrusy aroma.

How big do Calamondins get? Grown in a container, you can expect this citrus tree to reach a height of 3-4 ft (90 cm - 1.2 m).

You can expect an abundance of flowers and fruits, beginning in its second year. Fragrant, white, star-shaped flowers will appear at the tips of branches in summer, followed by 1-2 in (2.5-5 cm) fruits.

Ripening slowly, the fruits change from deep green to bright orange. You'll usually see flowers and fruits on the tree at the same time, making calamondin tree a fresh, colorful accent for a sunny room.

There is no hurry to pick calamondin oranges. They're long-lasting, so you can enjoy them for months on the tree. These oranges are tart, to say the least. Sample one for sourness before using any in cooking. You can use them in place of lemons in a recipe. I've heard they do make delicious marmalade.

Calamondin Tree Problems, Solutions and Answers

Prune your plant back when new growth starts in spring to prevent it from getting leggy. Pruning back long branches in spring will encourage new branches to grow from just below the cut. Cut at an angle just after a leaf node (where a leaf attaches to a stem).

Repot young plants every couple years. Plants won't bloom if they are overpotted, so keep them in small containers. Use a pot that's about 6 in (15 cm) in diameter until plants are 3 or 4 years old, then move up to an 8 in (20 cm) container. When repotting, set the plant at the same depth it was in the former pot; don't bury stems because they'll rot. Always use a pot with a drainage hole to prevent root rot.

Pollinate your plant. Calamondin orange trees that are grown indoors will need to be hand-pollinated to trigger fruit production. Relax, it's easy to do. Use a small, dry paintbrush to dab each flower. Wiggle the brush around the center of each flower, moving from flower to flower. This carries the pollen from male to female flowers, just like bees do it.

Something bugging your plant? Look over your calamondin tree for scale insects. They're small, brown, round-shaped insects attracted to the stems and leaves of citrus trees. Because this plant will produce edible fruits, it's a good idea to remove scale by scraping each one off by hand. If they are difficult to remove, try dabbing each one with a cotton swab dipped in vegetable oil to loosen them.

No blooms? You may have your citrus tree in a too-large container. Plants often bloom best if their roots are a little snug in the pot. See "Repot" tips above.

Dropped flower buds? Flower buds that fall off before growing fruit is likely caused because the air is too dry. Indoor humidity can drop drastically in winter. I use a humidity monitor near tropical plants; it's the only sure way to know whether they are suffering in a dry home. See "Humidity" tips below.

Image istockphoto.com

Calamondin Growing Tips

Light: Give your orange tree as much direct sunlight as you can year-round (at least 4 hours of direct sunlight each day). Turn the plant a quarter turn every week because it will tend to grow toward the light source. You can move it outdoors during the warm months to give it a boost.

Water: Water thoroughly, allowing the surface of the soil to dry between waterings. Soggy soil will lead to root rot, which is a sure way to kill a citrus tree.

Humidity: Moderate (around 40-50% relative humidity). Dry air may cause the flowers to drop off. Small pots can be placed on a tray of wet pebbles to increase humidity. Misting foliage first thing in the morning can help, but don't mist in hot, direct sun because it will burn the leaves. If your home is really dry, use a cool-mist room humidifier.

Temperature: Average room temperatures 65-75°F/18-24°C are ideal year-round. Calamondin trees can take warmer temperatures in summer, up to 80°F/27°C, and will tolerate a minimum of 50°F/10°C in winter. It's a good idea to keep your plant away from heat/AC vents and away from doorways during the winter months; it doesn't like cold blasts of air.

Soil: Use a soil-less, peat moss-based potting mix with added perlite and/or vermiculite for fast drainage. Citrus trees don't like their roots in soggy soil.

Fertilizer: I highly recommend an organic fruit tree fertilizer. It contains all the nutrients citrus trees need for healthy root growth and promotes flowers and fruits.

Propagation: Take stem cuttings in early summer. With a sharp knife or razor blade, take 4 inch (10 cm) stem tip cuttings with at least 2-3 leaf nodes without flowers or fruit. Dip cut end in hormone rooting powder before inserting in moist potting mix, then enclose in a plastic bag to maintain humidity. Stem cuttings will root in about 6-8 weeks.
